Background of the Study: Chemical exposure in industrial settings is a significant concern for workers' health, particularly in sectors such as manufacturing, agriculture, and chemical production. In Kano State, industrial workers are often exposed to hazardous chemicals that can cause acute and chronic health conditions, including respiratory diseases, skin irritation, and poisoning (Nwadike et al., 2023). Nurses, particularly those in industrial settings or emergency departments, are crucial in responding to chemical exposure incidents. Their ability to quickly and effectively manage chemical emergencies can significantly impact patient outcomes and prevent long-term health complications.

While nurses are trained to handle various medical emergencies, the specific training and knowledge required to manage chemical exposure emergencies effectively are often overlooked. This study aims to evaluate nurses’ knowledge and practices in handling chemical exposure emergencies in Kano State industrial settings, focusing on their preparedness, response strategies, and the challenges they face.

Statement of the Problem: Chemical exposure incidents are common in industrial settings in Kano State, yet the knowledge and preparedness of nurses in handling such emergencies remain unclear. Inadequate knowledge of chemical exposure management can result in poor patient outcomes and delayed treatment. This study will assess nurses' knowledge and practice in managing chemical exposure emergencies and identify gaps in training and preparedness in Kano State industrial settings.

Objectives of the Study:

  1. To evaluate the level of nurses' knowledge in handling chemical exposure emergencies in Kano State industrial settings.
  2. To assess the practices of nurses in managing chemical exposure incidents in industrial settings.
  3. To identify challenges nurses face in managing chemical exposure emergencies in Kano State industrial settings.

Research Questions:

  1. What is the level of nurses' knowledge regarding the management of chemical exposure emergencies in Kano State industrial settings?
  2. What are the common practices of nurses in handling chemical exposure emergencies in Kano State industrial settings?
  3. What challenges do nurses face in managing chemical exposure emergencies in industrial settings?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. Nurses in Kano State industrial settings with specialized training in chemical exposure management have a higher level of knowledge and competence in handling chemical emergencies.
  2. Nurses in Kano State industrial settings who have higher levels of knowledge and training in chemical exposure management perform better in handling such emergencies.
  3. Lack of adequate training and resources significantly hinders nurses' ability to manage chemical exposure emergencies effectively.

Scope and Limitations of the Study: The study will focus on nurses working in industrial settings in Kano State and their preparedness and practices in handling chemical exposure emergencies. Limitations may include challenges in accessing industrial settings for data collection and variations in training programs across different facilities.

Definitions of Terms:

  • Chemical exposure: Contact with harmful chemicals that can lead to acute or chronic health problems.
  • Chemical exposure emergencies: Incidents where workers are exposed to harmful chemicals, requiring immediate medical intervention to prevent or mitigate health effects.
  • Industrial nurses: Nurses who work in industrial settings, providing care for workers and responding to emergencies related to workplace hazards.
